Cooling mode on my air conditioner

My roommate is obsessed with the smell of lavender. I think his mom used a lot of lavender in his childhood or something. Because of this, everything is lavender scented. Our hand soap, dish soap, laundry detergent, fabric softener and candles all smell of lavender. Since I don’t really mind the smell, I just let him have his way. When my roommate and I had to replace our HVAC system’s air filter, we came across scented air filters. There are all sorts of scents you can pick out for cooling filters. You can get lemon, spring flowers, baby powder and yes, lavender. My roommate was super excited by our find and said we needed to stock up. So the two of us bought around 40 scented lavender air filters. After using the scented AC filter for a week, I can tell you I am not a fan. Lavender is great in soaps and candles, not so much in air filters. I think the reason is that an air conditioning filter is meant to catch dust from going into the HVAC equipment. The lavender smell mixed with dust is a gross smell. It kind of smells like old, grimey lavender in our place. The odor is so bad that I have even looked into air purifiers. I wanted to see if the air purification system would be cheap enough and fix the smell. It would be an expensive investment. What my roommate and I need to do is just toss all those filters and get new ones. My roommate is not willing to give up though. He thinks if we clean the HVAC enough, the smell will get better.
