One of my favorite parts of working from home is that I can set up my environment however I want. I’ve been doing this for a long time, almost seven years. After the first three, I decided that I wanted to have my own work area separate from my bedroom. It was important to me to go to bed and not have to look at my desk. I wanted to be able to really get away from work at the end of the day. So when I went to rent a house with a group of friends, one of the roommates and I split a spare room off the living room to put our desks on either side, with a couch in the middle. Our little dog usually curls up on the couch while I work as all the roommates are at their jobs, and my cat sleeps on the bed I put on top of the filing cabinet. The best part is that the room doesn’t cost us that much extra money–it has its own HVAC zone control. This zone heating means that when no one is in the room, we can turn the heat off and close the door so its not costing us any money on the utility bill. I can turn it on when I walk in, and because it’s a whole room baseboard, it heats up fast! Then when I’m done my work for the day, I can just shut the heat off again. I’m so grateful to have a work space that I can set to my exact needs, without disturbing my housemates.
