My husband and I have recently inherited the home of our dreams. Dating when we were young, we would spend a lot of time at his father’s house on the lake. My husband’s parents divorced at a young age, so he would spend most of his days with his father and weekends with his mother. Now that his father is moving into a retirement living community, the property has been passed down to us. We’re very excited, but its also a little daunting. We had only been to visit for parties and events since the two of us work so much, so we had no idea what work had been done to the house at its core. It turns out since my husband moved out and we got married, almost nothing had been accomplished. The attic still wasn’t fully converted into a bedroom, even though the walls were all there and the windows and insulation were finished. His father still hadn’t finished installing the HVAC system to connect the room to the rest of the house. While the woodburning stove had been maintained and was in great working order, the HVAC system itself hadn’t been cleaned or properly serviced in ages. We suspect that was because my father-in-law hadn’t ben using at all–he had been heating the house with only the woodburning stove because he was too cheap to go out and buy oil. Instead he was chopping wood and just seasoning it himself before winter every year. It’s going to take a lot of work to get this place to our dream home, but we’ll start with hiring a local furnace contractor to get the oil heater up and running before winter hits.
