I will never forget my internship during my senior year of high school. I never really felt like I fit in at school so I decided to sign up for the alternative educational program that was more flexible. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go to college or not but I knew that a full day of high school classes wasn’t working for me. My dad’s friend from his baseball league had an internship program through his HVAC business, and, after looking into it, it seemed perfect for me. He got me hooked up with the internship and we all hoped for the best. I had nothing to lose and everything to gain by the experience. About halfway through the year, I thought I had seen it all when it came to maintenance of HVAC systems. The most common problems were caused by folks that did not care for their air filters correctly. They also rarely ever had their ductwork cleaned. Many of their concerns could have been solved by regular HVAC maintenance a couple of times a year. Everyone thinks they are immune to problems with their HVAC systems until they are forced to call us for emergency help. The worst problem that I have seen happened last year in an old run down apartment building. The moment the team walked into the building, we knew it was not going to be a fun job. The ductwork hadn’t even been touched in years. We ended up completely stripping the old vents and installing the new air ducts. It was completely infested with any and every bug you can imagine. We also ended up installing a new filtration system that will hopefully avoid the same problems in the future. Of course, this will only happen if the building manager remembers to change out the filters when needed.
