Losing a business advancement

My parents were just talking to me last week about how they hosted this dinner party to boast to friends about their fancy new heating and air conditioning system. While the dinner was a hit, they said it was still a disappointing night for one simple reason: Everyone else at the party had the same renovations done at their homes. What are the odds, huh? Well, I would say the odds are pretty high, seeing as the contractor who performed the renovation for my parents’ heating, ventilation and air conditioning system has been running ads on TV and in magazines all year long. Personally, I found the contractors’ ads to be painfully annoying, even if the services are reliable and the prices are cheap. I could be jaded though, since my parents refuse to trust me with handling any of their heating and air conditioning concerns. Oh, did I forget to mention? I too am a certified heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractor. I went through a year and a half of thorough education and certification courses to become a technician, and then spent another two years working full time for a local contractor to build experience. I passed my certification to be a specialist while becoming a certified contractor, all in the following two years. Not only am I just as skilled as the contractor my parents hired to fix their home’s HVAC system, but I would have cut them the same discount by being family! Come on, they’re my parents – I would’ve done it for free if they just asked and were patient! Sadly, they’ve never been the patient types – hence me having to deal with losing more business to this jerk contractor in town. If I had the money to run flashy ads on TV for my business, I’d probably be just as rich as him!
