I try to be as frugal and thrifty as I possibly can. I clip coupons from newspapers and online ads, I cook all of my food from scratch and I even ride my bike to work a few times a week to save on gas. But my achilles heel when it comes to money is my air conditioner. My electricity bill has been out of control the past few months and I try to be as mindful as possible about only using lights when I need them and leaving outlets unplugged and appliances turned off. But no matter how hard I try, I just can’t handle living in my house at any temperature above 74 degrees. This is easy most of the year when the weather is cooler but I can’t imagine getting the electric bill down this time of the year no matter the climate. But my brother gets by with just a window air conditioner for his entire 3 bedroom single story house. He says it’s all he needs, aside from a handful of fans and some “good windows,” as he says. My mother in law is the same–she lives in the same town and in the same neighborhood and she also gets by with just a window AC and some ceiling fans. The only thing I can surmise is that everyone is different and has different needs when it comes to heating and cooling their living space. I’m thrifty with everything else even if I spend more than I’d like on powering an air conditioner constantly 24/7. But at the end of the day it’s what makes me comfortable and that’s worth the money I save from everything else.
