I am fortunate that my home is equipped with radiant flooring throughout every room. This type of heating system offers numerous benefits that make it the most economical and luxurious type of temperature control on the market. Although radiant flooring does not offer cooling capability, this is not a drawback for me. I live in an area of the country which is normally cold and wet for most of the year. I don’t need air conditioning, but heating is an absolute necessity. I love that the radiant system is totally concealed beneath the floors. There is no ugly equipment taking up living space and forcing me to arrange furniture around it. There are no vents cut into my walls and ceilings blasting dust and hot air into the room. There is also no ductwork wasting energy, taking up space and making noise. In fact, the radiant system is silent. There are no sounds of the heating system starting up or shutting down during the night, no rattling of pipes and no whooshing air. Because the heat is transported by water instead of air, it is far cleaner and promotes healthier air quality. I don’t need to worry about changing air filters, because radiant heating doesn’t require air circulation. Instead, it infuses the heat into the air which helps avoid temperature stratification. This also keeps my home nice and clean, and protects the health of my family. With how safe, clean and energy efficient hydronic heating is, I am surprised it is not found more often in public settings, such as schools, healthcare facilities and daycares. Radiant heating even provides the option of a snowmelt system to eliminate plowing, shoveling and potential injury from slipping on the ice.
