I grew up in an old house next to the water in a very warm climate. The floors creaked, the shutters were off their hinges, and the driveway was full of holes where roots were coming through. As a kid, I can remember lying in bed, listening to nighttime noises. Every sound was amplified in the creaky old house, and the one that scared me most was the air conditioning unit, which was always kicking on in the middle of the night. Cooling our drafty house was no small task, and the old air conditioner would grumble and groan unimaginably while I hid beneath my covers. I would imagine that the wheezing of the air conditioner was some monster coming to get me, although it was probably just in dire need of repair. However, we never had enough money to get the air conditioner repaired while I was a kid, so I grew up spending my nights with the sheet over my head, waiting for the air conditioner to come and get me in my sleep.
After I left home, my mom finally called an HVAC technician to repair the rattling air conditioner. While she was at it, she had a furnace installed in the basement. The sound of that heater coming on at night is enough to scare even the most courageous visitor. It looks like twenty years from now she’ll have to call another HVAC technician to end the night terrors of her grandkids. When I get a home of my own, I will hire the best air conditioner service to install the most silent heater and air conditioner in the HVAC business.
