Recently my husband Tim and I were in the market for a new thermostat. We had installed a new heating and air conditioning system the year before, but at that time, we didn’t really need a whole new thermostat so we decided to just keep our old one until it died. Well, last month, the thermostat totally died. We couldn’t even adjust the heating or the A/C for a few days! I found out a lot of interesting information about thermostats when we were researching and shopping for a new one. I don’t know if you know this, but thermostats don’t only control your home’s heating and cooling system. That might sound like a funny thing to say, because of course they do control the heating and cooling – but the thing is that thermostats also control your family’s overall comfort in your home. Most of the thermostats that we researched operate electronically. We did a lot of research on digital programmable thermostats. Unlike mechanically operated thermostats, digital thermostats are mercury-free. These thermostats also are designed to give you pinpoint accuracy when it comes to the temperature inside your house. Not only that, they are great at controlling any type of air conditioning system, furnace or heating unit, heat pump, and radiant or hydronic flooring systems. Of course, Tim and I decided to get a digital programmable thermostat instead of a mechanical one. It just made sense to us to get something more high tech to help us maintain a constant comfortable temperature in our home, not to mention the improved indoor air quality it helps to provide.
