My parents have always had a vegetable garden that was the envy of the neighborhood. Growing up we had a bountiful harvest on the dinner table from late March well into the Fall. I didn’t even know about farmer’s markets and roadside produce stands until I was in my early teens. I guess I always thought that everybody grew their own produce. For all of these reasons it didn’t surprise me when, after we were grown and gone, they decided build and addition. This wasn’t a room for living it was an attached greenhouse so they could garden year round. They ordered the blueprints online and then set about getting all of the materials to construct the garden space. One thing that they needed professional help for was the HVAC equipment. Greenhouses have to be set up so that you can control the air flow, temperature, and humidity for the various species of plants and vegetables you are growing. Some have longer growing periods and require different soil temperature to germinate. The HVAC specialist was able to design a perfect system for them and once it is complete they can enjoy their new space anytime they want to. Mom is even thinking about offering gardening classes in the space to help pay for her supplies. I am sure there will be many people around us that will jump at the chance to learn from her. Then they will be able to grow their own food too. I did not inherit that green thumb of hers so I will forever raid their house when I need my veggie fix.
