I was so excited to take the kids to their first real Rodeo! Okay, almost “real” anyway. The event was being held at an indoor arena and so it wouldn’t have the feel of a real one because we wouldn’t be sitting in the baking sun all day choking on the dusty air. I was ok with that because I had spent much of my childhood sitting on bleachers watching my family perform in trick riding and cattle roping. My weekends were spent riding in the truck from one show or another and I definitely didn’t want to have my kids doing the same thing. However, taking them to a Rodeo was still going to be exciting. The arena was air conditioned and the ventilation system would provide fresh air too. There wouldn’t be certain smells at the event that I wouldn’t miss either. I never would have thought that I could enjoy a Rodeo again but this event has given me a whole new appreciation for the sport. We were able to sit in comfortable seats, buy all of our favorite snacks, use indoor bathrooms, and best of all, avoid the beating sun. The air conditioning felt great and it really added to the enjoyment of the day. I am sure that many of my family members who competed back in the day would disagree with this style of Rodeo but for me, it is a great way to spend time with the kids. I may try and convince my dad, who used to rope, to come along with us next time it is in town. Who knows, he may share some of the same feelings I have.
