The apartment I grew up in is about an hour south of where I live now and the weather is for the most part the same… Winters are brutal with tons of snow and the summers can reach upwards of 100 degrees Fahrenheit… You could get away with not having an a/c unit during the summer time but it would not be honorable to spend a winter, where I am from, without a source of warmth, then the heat both of us used was delivered into the house using radiators located in front of each of the windows. The people I was with and I had cushions on top of these radiators which gave for a heated seating experience. There was but one family room that did not contain one such unit and the winters required a space heating system for comfort, on the other side of the spectrum, the only system of cooling ourselves for most of our childhood was the use of fans either mounted on the ceiling or sited in an open window! It wasn’t till I was about more than nine or eleven years outdated when the heat got to our parents enough for them to purchase an cooling system. The A/C was installed in the master family room, so it was often during those summer time weeks that our sisters or I could be found enjoying TV in there. It was a liberating experience to not be uncomfortably warm in the weeks of June-September… As a child, I used to think cooling systems were for wealthy folks only, and now I can’t imagine our apartment not making use of one. The A/C unit was reliable and never required repair or servicing from an Heating plus A/C serviceman.
