Better check the pilot light before calling the HVAC company

This past winter season, I thought we were in big trouble.

It was actually during the holiday season when our heating system entirely quit pushing out heat through the ductwork.

I checked the thermostat and it seemed like it was working, but the temperature was dropping despite the setting on the thermostat. I knew that if we called up the HVAC company, it would cost a great deal of money during that time and there was no way I could afford emergency HVAC assistance! I decided to go down and have a good look at the HVAC unit. My wife suggested that I try looking at the pilot light to see if that was still going. Sure enough, when I looked at the pilot light, it was entirely out. This was brilliant because all we really had to do was relight the pilot light! So I lighted the pilot light and before I knew it, we were able to get the furnace blazing again and had the heating pouring through the ductwork once again! I was really happy that my wife asked me to check the pilot light, because that was something I wasn’t even thinking about. I was seriously thinking about calling the HVAC company, but that would have made us entirely broke for the holidays and we really wouldn’t have had a very enjoyable Christmas holiday. For future winter seasons, I’m definitely going to always make sure we get a proper tune-up with our HVAC equipment, so we never have to worry so much about our heating system breaking down on us. I certainly will check the pilot light first thing as well before thinking about calling the HVAC company.
