I am fairly handy around the house.
While I’m not a pro, I do alright.
Being able to fix stuff has saved me quite a bit of money over all these years for sure. I’m also one of those people who likes to keep a focused eye on what my money gets spent on. But, there is one thing I don’t even think about doing myself. The heating and cooling system in our home gets maintained by a professional. There is zero hesitation about writing that check. I found out that 85 percent of all HVAC service call could have been avoided through proper maintenance. There are neighbors of mine who think it’s just a rip off but they are simply kidding themselves. Not using a certified pro to maintain your HVAC system will eventually catch up with everyone. Given the price of this equipment, you’d think that we would all view maintenance costs as an investment. On average, leaving a heating and cooling system unmaintained will reduce the lifespan of that unit by a whopping 55 percent. No way I would ever let that happen. In fact, I am signed up for a regular HVAC maintenance program. The HVAC tech comes out twice per year to thoroughly go through all of the equipment. I’ve watched these people do their job and it is much more than a simple walk thru. These certified HVAC pros pay attention to every detail of your equipment. They maintain critical parts while also watching for signs of potential trouble. I am for sure the fairly handy person who will have a look at most repair situations. But, I know my limitations and you should too. Have a pro do all the maintenance on your HVAC system.
