Broken thermostat makes me want smart thermostat

It might be nice to have a thermostat that does this automatically for me

My home is usually super comfortable. Our heater and air conditioner work great and I’ve never had a problem, until recently. Just the other night I woke up when it was still dark out because I was freezing cold. I piled on a few more blankets and went back to sleep, not giving it much thought, until I awoke a few hours later and was freezing again despite all of the blankets. I got up and checked the thermostat and it said that it was 75 degrees, just what I had set it too. I knew something was wrong: either I was dying or my thermostat was not working. I was leaning towards it being the thermostat. I grabbed my infrared meat thermometer and checked the temperature of the wall next to the thermostat. The thermometer read 56 degrees so I turned off my air conditioning. At first light, I called out an HVAC repairman. He confirmed that my thermostat was, indeed, reading wrong. I expected him to just replace it with a similar thermostat to the one I had been using but then he told me about smart thermostats. They are digital and can be controlled from my phone. That option was a little bit more expensive but I like the idea of being able to program a new thermostat from my phone. I usually lower the temperature a little at night to sleep better and then raise it in the morning. It might be nice to have a thermostat that does this automatically for me. I understand that a smart thermostat can save me money on my electric bill too. This makes sense since it is newer technology.
