I am So Old I Remember Having No A/C at School

Some may even choose not to send their kids to school even if the a/c was just under repair.

I live in the south, and there is no doubt that one of the things I count on every day is my air conditioning system. When I was a kid, I lived even further south, where the weather was even hotter, and I highly doubt there is anyone alive down there who does not have air conditioning in their home. Back in the day, however, I can remember going to school and not having any air conditioning. True, we did not have school during the summer months, but even so, it was just plain hot and muggy inside those classrooms with no a/c. Most classrooms did have windows that opened, which is no longer the case, and we did open them. Classrooms also used ceiling fans. Again, most public schools today do not have ceiling fans, and they certainly never even consider opening their windows. I can’t imagine any parents even putting up with a school that did not have adequate a/c. If a public school tried to operate with a high quality, operable HVAC system, the parents would be down there complaining at the PTA meetings and in the office of the school board every day. Some may even choose not to send their kids to school even if the a/c was just under repair. Today’s kids are definitely more spoiled than we were as children, but I totally understand the reason why. AS an adult, I had to teach one whole semester with no HVAC working in the building where my classroom was housed. I had surgery that summer, and I was still recovering when school started back. It was very bad for my health living without that a/c, and I hope to never do it again.
