Last year for our anniversary, my husband I went to a beautiful national park out in the middle of nowhere. We really wanted to be alone and have no interruptions. We barely had cell phone service most of the time; the area we were in was very remote. We had chosen to rent a small log cabin close to the outskirts of the park and we were very excited about getting back to nature and spending a quiet week with each other. When we arrived at the cabin on our anniversary, it was the end of October and we were experiencing some really warm weather. However, after we had been there for a couple of days, the weather suddenly turned cooler and we were freezing after the sun went down! Only then did we realize that we didn’t know what type of heating unit the cabin was equipped with. We hadn’t thought to ask the landlords since it had been being so warm outside. Then after it turned so cold, we had no cell service so we couldn’t ask them over the phone. We looked all over the cabin for a gas furnace, an oil furnace, a heating pump, a kerosene heater, or even an old timey wood burning stove. We couldn’t find anything of the sort. Then we noticed a big stack of firewood outside the back door. It was then that we figured out that we had no means of heating the cabin except with old fashioned firewood and a wood burning fireplace! It ended up being very romantic, once we finally got the fire going.
