I was at my mom and dad’s house the other day doing some cleaning for them.
They are getting on in years now, and so once in a while I come over and try to tackle a big cleaning or home improvement project for them.
This time, I decided that I was going to clean all of the baseboards and air vents in their house for them. This would include the air vents in the ceilings and in the floors, plus the air registers. It was a bigger job than you might think, honestly. My parents have a fairly large house, and so with the HVAC system that they have, there are a lot of air vents and air register covers throughout their two story house. They told me that I really didn’t need to clean all the baseboards for them, but that they would love it if I would clean the air registers. I got out the vacuum and some cleaner and a rag and proceeded to start cleaning the baseboards. Whenever I would come to an air register, I would just suck the dust off the air vent covers with the vacuum and move on. Then I happened to notice that there was dirt and debris caked inside one of the air vent covers. I couldn’t even dislodge it with the vacuum hose. So I got a screwdriver and took off the air vent cover. There was dirt, debris, and a pile of leaves inside the air vent! At this point I knew that there was something going on with the ventilation system in their house. I stopped what I was doing right then and called our local HVAC company. I made an appointment for them to come out and do a thorough air duct cleaning.
