Letting up on HVAC load is crucial in the heat of summer

Don’t get me wrong, I love being inside a really cool home when it is smoking hot outside.

  • Add to that the fact that many of us are spending a lot more time at home due to the pandemic.

But, there are limits as to how cool the house really needs to be. There was a summer not too long ago where I saw my 12 year old daughter put on a sweatshirt in the middle of July while sitting in our living room. Somehow, that image slowly made its way into the decision making part of my brain. It wasn’t too many more weeks later that I realized that I was so over cooling my house with the HVAC. The temperature, in the part of the country, hover right around triple digits for much of the 4 months of heat season. These days the setting for the HVAC is reflective of the outside temps. The HVAC never set more than 15 degrees cooler than the outside temperature. During the time I spied my kid putting on layers in our house, I was keeping the inside in the low 70’s. And, I was doing this all day and night. I shake my head at the insanity of it all when I think about it now. More importantly, I have saved my poor HVAC unit from a totally unnecessary load to bear over the summertime. Our HVAC is no spring chicken. But it still needs to run for the next several years before we replace it. Hopefully, greatly reducing the massive load on the HVAC will allow it to make it to the finish line.
