Working as a long distance truck driver for the past three years has been quite a wild ride if you will excuse the pun. I have had the chance to see every square inch of this country and meet some very interesting people along the way. I got into the trucking business by accident after I was laid off from my job as an HVAC technician. It was a good job with great benefits and I did not know what I was going to do after the layoff. I had been repairing and installing air conditioners and furnaces for the better part of twenty years by that point, and the thought of having to start all over again was daunting to say the least. It might seem like the best choice would be to look for another job in the HVAC industry and believe me I did try, but ultimately there just was not enough work to go around in the area I live in. Since moving out of my area was not really an option for me because of the kids I decided to try something new. I was looking through one of the local papers and saw an ad for being a truck driver. I had to go to school for it and was tethered to the same company for 18 months afterward, but it has been so worth it in the long haul. Now I am making a great wage and get to explore the country while getting paid for it. It can be a little gnarly at some of the truck stops trying to use their showers but it is a small price to pay.
