It totally breaks my heart to hear about the constant systematic racism that my neighbor Tony is victim to all of the time.
When you’re privileged enough to not be seen as an “other” by the majority race where you are living, it’s totally easy to forget what it’s like for those who are.
He can’t walk into the grocery store without getting crazy looks from at least one patron or employee. When he wants to buy clothing or electronics for instance, he is often followed around the store by a manager and is hardly ever left alone to shop peacefully. Worst of all, he is always facing extreme adversity with his managers, everyone from local restaurants where he once waited tables to the university he was recently genuinely working at. The last task turned into a real nightmare when fellow staff members started isolating themselves from Tony because he decided to wear a shirt to work that simply stated, “Black Lives Matter.” Soon thereafter, he was stopped by campus police and he was told to lay on the ground plus get forcefully handcuffed while he kept telling them that he was a staff member. Word got back to Tony that several of his coworkers dialed up the campus police on purpose to harass him into quitting his task. Not only did Tony find an attorney who specializes in police misconduct, however they also handle workplace discrimination suits. He took all of the evidence that he could get together plus presented it to his attorney when they met together. The attorney is completely confident that my neighbor Tony will easily succeed with his case if it ever heads to trial.
